Giants Strike First in Wintry Chicago Showdown
The Giants came to Wrigley Field hungry for a win. They'd beaten the Cubs big—18 to 3—just two days before. Then Chicago bounced back 3-2 in a wild extra-inning game. Now, on this Monday night, San Francisco wanted to finish the series strong.
The first inning exploded. Jung Hoo Lee stepped up with two outs. Jameson Taillon threw a cutter at 89 miles per hour. Lee's bat met it perfectly. The ball shot through the Cubs defense into center field. Rafael Devers sprinted home. Luis Arraez took third. The Giants led 1-0 and the energy was electric. San Francisco's lineup had come ready to battle.
Cubs Battle Back on Ballesteros' Big Hit
Chicago wasn't going down without a fight. The Cubs had plenty of talent and speed in their lineup. They needed just one swing to tie the game up.
Two innings passed. The game stayed 1-0. Then, in the bottom of the third, the moment came. Moises Ballesteros stepped to the plate. Trevor McDonald wound up and fired a 95-mile-per-hour sinker. Ballesteros connected. The ball flew to center field. Carson Kelly raced home from third base. The crowd at Wrigley erupted. The score was suddenly 1-1. Both teams were battling hard for control of this tight contest.
Chapman's Late Rally Seals Giants Victory
Innings passed with the game locked at 1-1. Both pitching staffs held strong. Both defenses made plays. The tension built and built as nine innings came and went.
Then came extra baseball in the tenth. Matt Chapman stepped up for the Giants. Trent Thornton pitched for Chicago. The cutter came in at 89 miles per hour. Chapman saw it and swung. The ball rocketed to center field. Cox sprinted home from third base. Giants 2, Cubs 1. The ballgame was over. San Francisco finished 27-39, while Chicago fell to 34-32. The Giants grabbed a huge road victory.
