The Giants Edge the Nationals in Twelve
The San Francisco Giants traveled to Washington to face the Nationals on Saturday, April 18. Both teams were looking to bounce back after Friday's game, where the Giants won convincingly, 10–5. The Nationals wanted to show they could compete, while the Giants aimed to keep their winning momentum going. This game would turn into an epic battle that went all the way to the twelfth inning. The final score showed the Giants prevailing 7–6 in one of the most dramatic contests of the young season. Every pitch mattered as both teams refused to give up, making this a thrilling game for anyone watching.
Early Scoring Surprises and Momentum Shifts
The Nationals struck first when Wood launched a tremendous home run in the bottom of the first inning. His powerful swing sent the ball soaring 406 feet to left-center field with an exit velocity of 109 mph. That gave Washington a quick 1–0 lead. However, the Giants responded in the second inning when Gilbert singled to right, scoring Ramos and tying the game. But the Nationals weren't done yet. They erupted for three more runs in the bottom of the second through a combination of hits and smart baserunning. Wood's hit-by-pitch and García Jr.'s single brought in multiple runs, extending Washington's lead to 5–1. The Giants found themselves in a hole early on.
The Giants Charge Back in Extra Innings
The Giants refused to quit despite being down 5–1. In the third inning, Schmitt doubled to left, and a fielding error allowed Chapman and Arraez to score, cutting the deficit to two. Later in the game, Ramos hit a powerful home run that traveled 378 feet to left field, bringing Lee home and tying the game at 5–5. Devers added another run in the seventh with a crucial single to left. When the Nationals scored in the ninth to make it 6–6, the game moved into extra innings. Finally, in the twelfth inning, Chapman's single to left scored Arraez with the winning run. The Giants had shown incredible resilience and determination to win this marathon contest.
