Cardinals Unleash the Bats Early
The St. Louis Cardinals rolled into Wrigley Field with revenge on their minds. After a close battle with Atlanta the night before, St. Louis was hungry for a big win. David Peterson took the mound for Chicago, looking to shut down the Cardinals' lineup. But Nathan Church had other plans. With two outs in the second inning, Church crushed a 79-mph curve into right field. The ball soared 384 feet and crashed into the bleachers. Jose Fermín and Jordan Walker came running home. Just like that, the Cardinals jumped ahead 3-0. Church's blast ignited the visitors and sent a message: today belonged to St. Louis.
Cardinals Keep Pounding, Cubs Can't Find an Answer
The Cardinals weren't done yet. In the third inning, they kept attacking. Nelson Velázquez hit a sacrifice fly that scored Ivan Herrera. Then Masyn Winn smacked a single to right, bringing Jordan Walker home. Jose Fermín doubled to center, and Winn rushed across the plate. The score ballooned to 6-0. In the fourth inning, the beating continued. Alec Burleson singled to right, scoring two more runners. Then Winn stepped up and launched a 391-foot home run to left-center. Velázquez and Burleson came home. It was now 11-0. Chicago's pitching staff was getting shredded. The Cubs couldn't stop the Cardinals' hitting barrage no matter what they threw.
Cardinals Complete the Blowout, Chicago Scores Late
By the fifth inning, it was total destruction. Nelson Velázquez walked, and then Alec Burleson singled to right again. Two more Cardinals sprinted home. The score hit 14-0. In the sixth inning, Ivan Herrera lined a single to center, scoring two more runners. St. Louis was up 16-0. Then Bryan Torres delivered the final punch in the seventh inning. The Cardinals' backup catcher launched a 369-foot home run to right. That made it 17-0. Chicago finally got on the board in the seventh when Alex Bregman doubled to left, scoring Pedro Ramirez. The Cubs' run came too late. The Cardinals had absolutely demolished the Cubs 17-1. Andre Pallante pitched outstanding baseball for St. Louis, recording five and two-thirds innings without allowing a single run.
