Cardinals and Astros Battle in Houston
The St. Louis Cardinals came to Houston on Sunday ready for another test. Both teams had played each other recently, and St. Louis won that game seven to five. The Cardinals wanted to keep their winning streak alive because they needed wins to get back into playoff contention. Houston was struggling with a four-game losing streak and hoped to bounce back at home. Matthew Liberatore took the mound for St. Louis while Mike Burrows pitched for the Astros. The Cardinals were building their season on young talent and developing arms, making games like this crucial for the team's future. Houston's pitching staff was in transition after losing their longtime ace, so this matchup presented an interesting challenge for both squads.
Cardinals Explode in the Fifth Inning
The game started quietly with no scoring in the first four innings. Houston struck first in the bottom of the third when Correa hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Trammell. The Astros had a one to nothing lead, but the Cardinals were just getting warmed up. In the fifth inning, St. Louis absolutely exploded at the plate. Scott II walked and drove in Winn, tying the score one to one. Then Wetherholt singled to right, scoring two more runs. Herrera followed with another single, bringing home Scott II with an impressive one hundred four mile per hour exit velocity. Suddenly, the Cardinals led four to one and had taken complete control of the game through spectacular hitting and smart baserunning.
Astros Rally Late but Cardinals Hold On
Houston did not give up despite trailing four to one. In the eighth inning, Alvarez blasted a home run over the right field wall, cutting the deficit to four to two. Moments later, Paredes singled to right, and both Altuve and Walker scored, tying the game at four to four. The Astros had mounted an incredible comeback and stunned the Cardinals with their resilience. However, St. Louis was not finished either. In the tenth inning, Winn doubled to left field, scoring three more runs and giving the Cardinals a seven to four lead. Houston answered back in the bottom of the tenth when Altuve singled to shortstop, bringing home Trammell for a final score of seven to five. The Cardinals held on to win their fifth consecutive game and improve their record.
