Cardinals Strike First, But Brewers Fight Back
The Cardinals came to Milwaukee after getting shut out 6-0 the night before. They were hungry for a win. Dustin May took the mound for St. Louis and threw hard from the start. In the fourth inning, Bryan Torres smacked a cutter from Chad Patrick and ripped a triple to right field. Jordan Walker raced home, and the Cardinals had the lead 1-0. The crowd at the Brewers' stadium went quiet. St. Louis was making noise now. May kept pitching strong stuff, striking out batters left and right. The Cardinals' young pitcher was locked in and ready to battle. Milwaukee needed to answer back quickly.
Brewers Bounce Back in the Eighth
The Brewers stayed calm and kept working. They knew they had plenty of time. In the eighth inning, things opened up for Milwaukee. Christian Yelich stepped in and fired a single to right field. Garrett Mitchell came racing home from second base and tied the game 1-1. The stadium exploded. But the Cardinals' shortstop Masyn Winn couldn't handle the next play cleanly. Jackson Chourio reached first on a fielding error. That wild play gave Sal Frelick the chance to score the go-ahead run. The Brewers took a 2-1 lead, and the momentum shifted completely. Milwaukee's bats woke up when it mattered most. The Cardinals' pitching got shaky at exactly the wrong time.
Brewers Hold On for the Victory
The Brewers' bullpen took over and locked things down. Aaron Ashby came in and pitched two strong innings with no runs allowed. Trevor Megill, the All-Star closer, delivered the final inning to seal the win. The Cardinals couldn't catch up. Their bats went quiet after that early first-inning score. Nolan Gorman struck out twice. Alec Burleson went hitless. The St. Louis lineup couldn't find any more magic. Final score: Brewers 2, Cardinals 1. Milwaukee moved to 33-20 on the season and kept rolling. St. Louis dropped to 29-26 and fell to 0-4 in their last four games. The Brewers' pitching staff came through in crucial spots.
