Cardinals Strike First Blood Against Struggling Mets
The Cardinals rolled into New York on Wednesday night after shutting out the Mets 7-0 the day before. Now they wanted more. The Mets were desperate to bounce back at home. St. Louis came out swinging in the first inning like they had something to prove. Jordan Walker smacked a single up the middle, and Wetherholt raced home. Two batters later, Masyn Winn hit a grounder that let Herrera score too. Just like that, it was 2-0 Cardinals. The Cardinals' bats were on fire from pitch one. They weren't going to give New York any breathing room. Austin Warren, the Mets pitcher, was already in trouble. The Cardinals had all the momentum in the world. New York needed to find an answer fast, but their hitters looked lost at the plate.
Walker and Velazquez Go Yard, Cardinals Blow It Open
By the third inning, Nelson Velazquez came up with a chance to add to the lead. He rocked a pitch deep to left-center field. The ball soared 403 feet before landing in the stands. Velazquez pumped his fist as he rounded the bases. One more Cardinal had gone deep. Then in the fourth inning, Jordan Walker stepped up again. This time he connected on a 92-mile-per-hour fastball. It flew 401 feet to center field and disappeared over the wall. Wetherholt and Herrera trotted home behind him. The score jumped to 7-0 before the Mets could even blink. St. Louis had complete control. Francisco Alvarez finally got the Mets on the board with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the fourth, but it barely dented the Cardinals' lead.
Cardinals Cruise to Easy Victory, Stay Hot
The Cardinals kept rolling in the fifth inning when Jose Fermin singled to right and brought home another run. By the ninth, Alec Burleson hammered a massive home run to right-center that traveled 408 feet. It was his second homer in two nights. The final score was Cardinals 9, Mets 2. St. Louis improved to 37-28 on the season and kept their five-game winning streak alive. The Cardinals' pitching staff was outstanding too. Andre Pallante earned the win with six strong innings. The Mets fell to 29-37 and watched their chance to build momentum slip away. St. Louis had dominated this entire series. New York couldn't catch a break. The Cardinals showed why they keep winning games.
