Rays Strike Early in Sunday Matinee Duel
The Tampa Bay Rays visited Boston on Sunday, May 10, ready to bounce back after losing the previous day. Their pitching depth would be key against the Red Sox at their home stadium. Nick Martinez took the mound for Tampa Bay, while Boston countered with Payton Tolle. Right from the start, the Rays came out swinging. Caminero launched a massive home run in the first inning, crushing a curveball 404 feet to left-center field with an exit velocity of 105 mph. That early blast gave Tampa Bay the lead and set the tone for the entire game. Boston couldn't answer immediately, and the Rays' offense showed they meant business from pitch one. The home run demonstrated why Tampa Bay's lineup could be dangerous when they connected with fastballs and breaking pitches.
Third Inning Explosion Puts Rays in Control
Things got even better for Tampa Bay in the third inning when they added two more runs. Simpson stepped up and singled to left field, and an error by Boston shortstop Story allowed Fortes to score from second base. The Rays weren't done yet. Williamson followed with a single of his own to right field, scoring Simpson and extending the lead to 3-0. Both hits came off Payton Tolle's fastballs, showing how Boston's pitcher was struggling to find his rhythm early. The Red Sox defense also stumbled at a critical moment, which helped Tampa Bay pile on the runs. By the end of the third inning, the Rays had built a commanding lead that Boston would struggle to overcome throughout the rest of the afternoon.
Rays Add Late Run; Boston Scores Only Once
In the sixth inning, Tampa Bay extended their advantage with another run when Mullins executed a sacrifice bunt. With runners on first and third and two outs, Mullins bunted the ball to the pitcher, allowing Williamson to score. Boston finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Gasper singled to right field, scoring Story. However, one run wasn't enough to overcome Tampa Bay's 4-0 lead going into the final innings. The Rays' pitching staff, led by Nick Martinez, held strong and didn't allow Boston to mount a comeback. When the game ended, Tampa Bay won 4-1 in a dominant performance. This victory improved the Rays to 26-13 and gave them an impressive 8-2 record in their last ten games, showing their resilience.
