Rays Strike First in Kansas City
The Tampa Bay Rays came into Kauffman Stadium hungry for more wins. They were riding a six-game winning streak and had already beaten Kansas City 10-4 the night before. The Royals needed to bounce back badly. Their record sat at 35-51, and they were struggling. Shane McClanahan took the mound for Tampa Bay, ready to keep the momentum going. In the very first inning, Junior Caminero stepped up to face Seth Lugo. The young Rays slugger crushed a 425-foot bomb to left field. Jonathan Aranda had scored ahead of him. Just like that, the Rays led 2-0 before Kansas City could even blink. The visitors from Tampa were off to a flying start in this Wednesday matchup.
McClanahan's Strong Arm Keeps Kansas City Off Balance
Shane McClanahan was unbeatable on this Wednesday night. He threw six innings and only gave up three hits. Kansas City could not figure him out at all. The Royals managed just one run across those six frames. Meanwhile, the Rays kept adding to their lead. In the sixth inning, Cedric Mullins came up with two outs against Seth Lugo. The speedy Rays outfielder ripped a 387-foot home run to right field. That made it 3-0, Tampa Bay. By the eighth inning, Jose Cuas was pitching for Kansas City. Mullins stepped up again and smacked a single to right. Victor Mesa Jr. scored on the hit. Now the Rays led 4-0, and Kansas City had no answers left.
Rays Shut Down the Royals, Extend Winning Streak
The final score stayed 4-0, Tampa Bay. The Rays had completely shut down Kansas City's bats. It was a dominant performance from start to finish. McClanahan's pitching was the star of the show. He only allowed three hits and struck out four batters. Cole Sulser, Garrett Cleavinger, and Kevin Kelly kept Kansas City quiet in the bullpen. Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez tried to spark the Royals offense, but they could not find their rhythm. Yandy Diaz went hitless for the Rays, but it did not matter. The team had too many weapons. With this win, Tampa Bay improved to 50-33. They extended their winning streak to seven games straight. Kansas City fell to 35-52. The Rays were now the team on fire heading into the All-Star break.
