Texas Struggles Early as Boston Takes Control
The Texas Rangers came to Fenway Park riding a 2-game winning streak. They wanted to keep the momentum rolling against the Boston Red Sox, who had lost four straight. But this night belonged to Boston from the jump. In the first inning, Wyatt Langford singled to left field off Sonny Gray's 88-mile-per-hour cutter, scoring Joc Pederson to put Texas up 1-0. That lead lasted about two minutes. Wilyer Abreu smacked a sacrifice fly to left, tying it up. Then Willson Contreras stepped in and launched a home run deep to center field. Just like that, Boston led 2-1 and the Rangers were in trouble. The Red Sox's bats were already heating up.
Red Sox Pitcher Gray Shuts Down Texas Lineup
Jack Leiter took the mound for Texas but ran into trouble fast. By the fifth inning, the Red Sox were pounding him. Ceddanne Rafaela doubled to left, and Wilyer Abreu doubled right after him. Then Contreras reached on an infield single, but Josh Jung's throwing error at third base let Abreu score. Caleb Durbin followed with a sacrifice fly, and Boston led 5-1. Meanwhile, Sonny Gray was dealing for Boston. The veteran pitcher threw six innings and allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out seven Rangers batters and walked nobody. Gray was in total control. The Red Sox were rolling.
Boston's Bats Explode Late as Rangers Fall Apart
The Red Sox put the game completely out of reach in the seventh and eighth innings. Wilyer Abreu crushed a home run in the seventh inning, a 421-foot blast to center field that made it 7-1. Then in the eighth, Ceddanne Rafaela went deep to left-center, a 374-foot shot that scored Connor Wong and pushed Boston ahead 9-1. Right after, Willson Contreras doubled to center, and another run scored. The final score read 10-1 in favor of the Red Sox. Texas finished 34-34 on the season. Boston improved to 27-39 but finally snapped their four-game losing streak with this dominant performance. The Rangers had no answer.
