Braves Pound Early as Blue Jays Fight Back
The Blue Jays came to Atlanta looking to bounce back after losing 3–4 the night before. You could feel the energy at Truist Park as Grant Holmes took the mound for the Braves. Right away, things got wild. Jesus Sanchez grounded into a double play in the first inning, but Nathan Lukes scored to give Toronto an early 1-0 lead. The Braves answered fast. Ha-Seong Kim's single to left scored Eli White on an error, tying the game 1-1. Then in the third inning, Lukes crushed an 85-mile-per-hour slider over the right field wall for a solo blast. The ball rocketed 374 feet into the Georgia sky. Toronto led 2-1. But Atlanta was just getting started.
Mauricio Dubon Destroys the Ball Deep
Then the Braves woke up completely. Patrick Corbin was pitching for Toronto when Mauricio Dubon stepped up to the plate in the third inning. Dubon crushed a 91-mile-per-hour sinker that traveled 405 feet—way out to center field. Two runners were on base. The ball disappeared over the wall. Dubon's three-run bomb sent Atlanta soaring ahead 4-2. Later in the seventh inning, more fireworks came off Toronto's bullpen. Adam Macko threw an 86-mile-per-hour slider to Ozzie Albies. Albies met it perfectly. The ball flew 393 feet to left field for a three-run homer. Atlanta was crushing the ball all night. The Braves pushed their lead to 7-2. Toronto's pitching staff was getting hammered.
Toronto Makes Late Push but Falls Short
You knew the Blue Jays weren't done fighting. They kept chipping away. In the ninth inning, Brandon Valenzuela stepped up against Tyler Kinley. Valenzuela ripped a 93-mile-per-hour fastball that soared 399 feet to right field. One swing and one run scored. Atlanta led 7-3. It wasn't quite enough for Toronto to stage a comeback. The final score stayed 7-3, Braves. Atlanta improved to 42-20 on the season and won their second straight game. Toronto dropped to 29-33, falling further behind in the division. Grant Holmes got the win after pitching six strong innings. The Braves' bats were simply too hot to handle tonight. This loss stung for a Toronto team that needed wins badly.
