Blue Jays Strike First in Fenway Park
The Toronto Blue Jays came to Boston riding a huge win from the night before. After crushing the Red Sox 6-1 on Tuesday, they wanted to keep rolling. But this game would be different. The Blue Jays attacked early against starter Jake Bennett. In the third inning, Andres Gimenez stepped up with Davis Schneider on base. Bennett threw an 84-mile-per-hour changeup down the middle, and Gimenez ripped it to right field for a single. Schneider raced home with the first run of the game. The Blue Jays weren't done yet. George Springer stole second base while Gimenez took third. Then Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to third base, but Gimenez scored on the play. Toronto led 2-0 before Boston even got a chance to bat.
Gimenez Adds Insurance Run in Eighth
Boston's bats stayed quiet through the middle innings. The Red Sox lineup couldn't find their rhythm against Toronto's bullpen arms. The Blue Jays pitchers were sharp and kept the scoreboard locked at 2-0. Then the eighth inning arrived, and Toronto's offense struck again. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. came to the plate facing Greg Weissert. Guerrero Jr. had already been dangerous all season at the plate. He lined a single to center field. Andres Gimenez, who had been all over the field with two stolen bases and two runs scored, raced home from second base. The run gave Toronto a 3-0 lead. That insurance run would prove huge. Boston's offense never caught fire. The Red Sox managed just scattered hits. Toronto's pitching staff was dominant all night long.
Toronto's Pitching Shuts Out Boston Clean
Toronto's pitching staff was the story of this game. Simeon Woods Richardson started and threw three strong innings without giving up a run. He scattered three hits and struck out one batter. Then the Blue Jays bullpen took over and was brilliant. Five different relievers came out of the pen, and none of them allowed a run across five and two-thirds innings. Louis Varland got the save. He struck out three batters in one inning. Boston's lineup never found its footing. The Red Sox managed just eight hits total. They couldn't string together hits when it mattered. Toronto's pitching locked down the win at Fenway Park. The Blue Jays improved to 36-38. Boston fell to 29-41 and lost their second straight game. Max Scherzer missed this game with back spasms, but Toronto didn't need him tonight.
