Blue Jays Strike First in Boston Comeback
The Blue Jays rolled into Fenway Park hungry for another win. Toronto had just shut out Boston 3-0 the night before, and the Red Sox were desperate to bounce back. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. wasted no time making his mark. In the first inning, he stepped up to face Sonny Gray and ripped a 410-foot bomb to center field. The ball exploded off his bat and sailed over the wall. Toronto led 1-0 before most fans had even finished their hot dogs. Two innings later, Andres Gimenez lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Kazuma Okamoto sprinted home from third base. The Blue Jays' lead grew to 2-0. Boston's bats stayed quiet through the early innings. The Red Sox needed something big.
Nathan Lukes Extends the Lead in Seventh
The game stayed tight through the middle innings as both teams searched for momentum. In the seventh inning, Nathan Lukes came up to the plate with a chance to do damage. Sonny Gray threw him a curve ball that hung in the zone. Lukes connected hard and the ball climbed toward right center field. It cleared the wall at 392 feet. Toronto suddenly led 3-0 and the crowd at Fenway grew restless. Boston had to respond fast. Trey Yesavage was pitching for Toronto when Willson Contreras stepped up with two outs. Contreras put the ball in play and it went to shortstop. Ceddanne Rafaela raced home from third base. The Red Sox cut it to 3-1. Boston's bats were finally waking up.
Red Sox Fight Back but Blue Jays Hold On
The eighth inning exploded with excitement. Isiah Kiner-Falefa stepped up and launched a 360-foot blast to left field. The ball smashed into the seats and the Red Sox tied it 3-2. The crowd jumped to their feet. But Caleb Durbin wasn't done. He drove the next pitch even deeper. His home run soared 386 feet to left center field. Boston took their first lead at 3-3. The ninth inning belonged to Toronto. Brandon Valenzuela faced Aroldis Chapman and doubled down the left field line. Ernie Clement came flying across home plate. The Blue Jays reclaimed the lead 4-3. Mason Fluharty entered for the save and shut down Boston completely. Toronto escaped with the win. The Blue Jays improved to 38-38 while Boston fell to 29-43.
