Cubs Wake Up Kevin Gausman Early
The Toronto Blue Jays came to Wrigley Field hoping to bounce back after losing to the Red Sox. Chicago had won two straight games and wanted to keep rolling. But right away, the Cubs made Kevin Gausman's night miserable. Seiya Suzuki ripped a double down the right field line in the first inning. Two runs scored. Then Carson Kelly stepped up and crushed a fastball 428 feet into left center field. The ball sailed over the wall like a rocket. Suzuki, Ian Happ, and Matt Shaw all crossed home plate. Kelly's three-run blast made it 6-0 Cubs before the Blue Jays could even bat. Alex Bregman singled to left, and Dansby Swanson jogged home. The first inning wasn't over yet—Gausman had already given up 7 runs. The home crowd jumped to their feet. Toronto's ace was in total trouble.
Springer Battles Back As Cubs Crush It
George Springer woke up the Blue Jays in the third inning. The veteran leadoff hitter smacked a single to left field, and Andres Gimenez raced home. Toronto was on the board at 1-7. Then the Cubs kept piling on in the sixth. Springer launched a fastball 374 feet into left field for a solo home run. The crowd roared. But Ben Brown, pitching for Chicago, stayed tough. In the sixth inning, the Cubs exploded. Brendon Little came in for Toronto and walked Carson Kelly. Spencer Miles relieved him and walked Swanson too. Pete Crow-Armstrong singled to right, scoring another run. Alex Bregman's grounder to third scored Kelly. Suddenly it was 10-2 Cubs. The game was completely out of control.
Cubs Pile On Late As Jays Collapse
The seventh inning was when everything fell apart for Toronto. Tyler Rogers came in to pitch and gave up an infield single to Carson Kelly. Happ scored. Then Justin Dean launched a triple to right field that just kept going. The ball bounced off the wall. Shaw and Kelly both scored, plus Swanson scored too. Three runs on one triple! Pedro Ramirez singled to left, and Dean raced home with the sixteenth run. The Cubs were unstoppable. Chicago's bats had completely worn down Toronto's pitching staff. The final score read 16-2, Cubs. Toronto fell to 37-39. Chicago improved to 40-36 and kept winning. The Blue Jays left Wrigley Field bruised and beaten. Sometimes one game teaches you tough lessons about baseball.
