Wood Explodes as Nationals Dominate Early
The Washington Nationals rolled into Cleveland's house on fire after crushing the Guardians 10-2 the night before. You could feel the momentum shift in the second inning when magic struck. Keibert Ruiz lined a single up the middle off Joey Cantillo's 80-mile-per-hour changeup, and two runners sprinted home. But that was just the appetizer. James Wood stepped up next and launched a monster 401-foot blast to right field. The ball sailed over everything like he was playing a different sport. Ruiz crossed the plate right behind it. Just like that, the Nationals had a 4-0 lead before most fans finished their hot dogs. Washington's young star was showing exactly why he's one of baseball's most exciting players.
Cleveland Fights Back But Cannot Catch Up
The Guardians would not go down without swinging. In the fifth inning, Jose RamĂrez stepped into the box against Cade Cavalli. With two outs and Steven Kwan on base, RamĂrez lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Kwan raced home and Cleveland had cut it to 4-1. The home crowd came alive, thinking maybe they could climb back into this game. But Washington's pitching was too sharp. Cavalli struck out seven batters across six innings, allowing just five hits and one earned run. The Guardians could not string together enough hits to mount a real comeback. Washington's young pitcher was in complete control, mixing speeds and keeping Cleveland's hitters guessing all night long.
Nationals Add Late Runs to Seal the Victory
The ninth inning sealed it for Washington. Andres Chaparro smacked a single to left field off Cleveland reliever Will Dion. The play was wildâNasim Nunez and James Wood both scored as Chaparro tried stretching it into a double but was thrown out at second. That made it 6-1 Nationals. Cleveland would get two more runs in the bottom of the ninth when Travis Bazzana doubled and Jose RamĂrez grounded out, pushing the final score to 6-3. But it was too late. Washington improved to 30-27 with the road victory while the Guardians dropped to 32-26. The Nationals' young core is proving they can win games on the road.
Was it a good night for Nationals hitters?
