Early scoring and momentum swing
Washington struck first in the opening inning when Abrams homered to right. That solo shot gave the Nationals a 1–0 lead and energized their dugout. However, Pittsburgh answered in the bottom of the second with a string of plays. Cruz walked in a run, then Lowe and Reynolds delivered hits that made it 4–1 for the Pirates. In the third inning, Horwitz homered to push the Pirates to 5–1. Those early runs built momentum for Pittsburgh and kept pressure on Washington’s young rotation. By the sixth inning the Pirates had turned the game into a big lead.
Big inning, late rally, and game meaning
The turning point came in the sixth inning when Pittsburgh erupted for many runs. Reynolds hit a triple that cleared the bases and made it 8–1, and O'Hearn doubled to extend the lead. Griffin and Cruz added runs to push the score to 12–1, and Lowe capped the big inning with a three-run homer to make it 15–1. Washington rallied in the seventh with two quick runs from Young and Nuñez, but Pittsburgh tacked on one more run in the eighth. The 16–5 final showed Pittsburgh’s offense was dominant and Washington still has work to do.
