Washington Arrives at Oracle Park for a Tight Battle
The Washington Nationals rolled into San Francisco ready for action on Tuesday night. They were playing at Oracle Park, the Giants' home stadium. Washington came in with a 34-33 record. San Francisco was struggling at 27-40, losers of their last game. Both teams wanted a win badly. The Nationals were missing ace Jake Irvin on the injured list. He had shoulder trouble and couldn't throw yet. But Washington's lineup was loaded with young stars ready to strike. James Wood, CJ Abrams, and Luis Garcia Jr. were all swinging hot bats. The Giants had Logan Webb on the mound. Webb is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He was coming off the injured list to help his team climb back into contention. The stage was set for an exciting night.
Webb Pitches Beautifully But Cracks in Late Innings
Logan Webb was sharp early for the Giants. He fired strike after strike through the first five innings. In the sixth inning, things changed. Luis Garcia Jr. of the Nationals stepped up with two outs. Webb threw an 86 mile-per-hour changeup and Garcia Jr. ripped a single to right field. James Wood came racing around third and scored the first run of the night. One to zero, Nationals. The Giants answered right back in their half of the sixth. Matt Chapman connected off Washington pitcher Mitchell Parker. Chapman's single to left brought home Jung Hoo Lee, who had been on base. The game was tied 1-1. Both teams were fighting hard, trading blows back and forth. Neither wanted to give an inch.
Nationals Explode Late to Win 4-3 on the Road
The eighth inning brought chaos. Clayton Beeter threw a pickoff error and Lee raced to second base. Bryce Eldridge crushed a double to left. Lee scored to put San Francisco ahead 2-1. Then Jonah Cox bunted the ball and Eldridge raced home. The Giants led 3-1 going into the ninth. But Washington would not quit. CJ Abrams stepped up and ripped a single to center. Two runners scored on the hit to tie it 3-3. Daylen Lile came through with another single. Abrams sprinted home for the go-ahead run. Final score: Nationals 4, Giants 3. Washington improved to 34-33. San Francisco fell to 27-40. The Nationals' young stars had come through in the clutch on the road.
