The Detroit Pistons battled back from a slow start to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 124-116 on Wednesday night. Both teams sit atop their conferences, but the defending champion Thunder were missing key players like superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Thunder Start Hot
Oklahoma City exploded out of the gates. The Thunder sprinted to a 34-22 lead after the first quarter. Their ball movement looked sharp. Shots were falling from everywhere. But without their MVP-caliber leader on the floor, sustaining that energy would be tough.
Pistons Take Control
Detroit flipped the script in the second quarter. Cade Cunningham orchestrated the offense like a conductor leading an orchestra. His passes zipped through defenders, finding open teammates in perfect rhythm. The Pistons outscored Oklahoma City 36-18 in that second period. Detroit took a 58-52 lead into halftime.
The third quarter belonged to the Pistons too. Jalen Duren attacked the rim with power, slamming home dunks that shook the basket. He finished with 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. His hands seemed magnetic, pulling down every loose ball. Detroit stretched their lead to 94-80 heading into the final frame.
Cunningham Commands the Court
Cade Cunningham put on a complete performance. He scored 29 points while dishing out 13 assists. His vision made defenders dizzy. He added 3 steals and 3 blocks, protecting both ends of the floor. Cunningham shot an impressive 68.8% from the field. He looked like a superhero in a Pistons jersey.
Duncan Robinson added 16 points with sharp shooting. Ausar Thompson contributed 11 points, 7 assists, and played lockdown defense with 3 steals.
Thunder Fight Without Their Stars
Oklahoma City battled despite missing Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Ajay Mitchell. Jaylin Williams led the way with 30 points and 11 rebounds. Cason Wallace scored 23 points. Aaron Wiggins and Jared McCain each added 20 points. But it wasn't enough.
The Pistons improved their record with their win. They proved they belong among the NBA's best teams.
