Spurs Are Serious Championship Contenders This Season
The Southwest Division is one of the most uneven in basketball right now. At the top, the San Antonio Spurs are legitimate title contenders with a 55-18 record. Below them, the Houston Rockets are fighting to stay relevant in the playoff race. Meanwhile, the New Orleans Pelicans, Memphis Grizzlies, and Dallas Mavericks are all rebuilding with young talent and future draft picks. The division tells five very different stories, and each team is chasing a completely different goal as the regular season winds down.
Wembanyama, Fox, and Castle Power the Spurs
Victor Wembanyama has transformed the Spurs into a true championship threat. The 7-foot-4 superstar is averaging about 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while leading the league in blocks. In his third season, he is already an MVP candidate and a strong contender for Defensive Player of the Year. De'Aaron Fox adds about 21 points and 6 assists, while Stephon Castle contributes around 18 points and 7 assists. Castle regularly flirts with triple-doubles, using his size and versatility to guard multiple positions. San Antonio's young core is growing fast, and the results are undeniable.
Rockets' Star Power Can't Fix Their Flaws
Houston's 43-29 record keeps them firmly in the playoff picture, but questions about their ceiling remain. Kevin Durant leads the team with about 25 points per game, and Alperen Şengün averages around 23 points and 9 rebounds while serving as the engine of the offense. Amen Thompson adds versatility as a defender who can guard multiple positions. However, the Rockets have struggled recently, dropping two straight games. Without injured Fred VanVleet, the guard rotation has been inconsistent, and Reed Sheppard has not yet established himself as a reliable secondary star. Houston has star power, but they haven't found that final step toward true contender status.
Pelicans, Grizzlies, and Mavericks Look Toward Future
Three Southwest teams are firmly in rebuild mode. New Orleans sits at 25-48, though Zion Williamson's health and Trey Murphy III's breakout season — around 21 points per game — provide genuine optimism. Memphis is 24-48 after trading Jaren Jackson Jr. and committing to young players like Cedric Coward and Walter Clayton Jr. Meanwhile, Dallas owns the worst record in the division at 23-50, but rookie Cooper Flagg is averaging over 20 points per game and already looks like a future superstar. Although these teams are losing now, each one believes their young core could make them dangerous again sooner than expected.
