Cam Skattebo’s 42-yard overtime burst gave the Giants a jolt in their last game, helping set up a thrilling win over Houston. Now New York carries that spark into Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, where the 4-2-1 Giants meet a 2-6 Eagles team searching for a turn in its season.
This NFC East matchup has a different feel than the rivalry games of recent years. Philadelphia won the Super Bowl only two seasons ago, but its offense has slowed to 17.1 points per game. The Eagles have lost four straight games, and their latest defeat showed how quickly a promising start can disappear. They led Washington 10-0 before the Commanders took control.
Philadelphia must find steadier answers at quarterback because Jalen Hurts is on injured reserve. Tanner McKee started against Washington and helped create that early lead, including a 24-yard pass to Saquon Barkley. But the Eagles also lost the ball on a sack and threw a late interception. Against New York, McKee will need to make quick, careful throws and avoid letting the Giants’ defenders create game-changing moments.
The Eagles’ best path begins with Barkley, the powerful runner facing his former team. He has 274 rushing yards in six games, and Philadelphia’s tough offensive line style is built to give him room. Yet Barkley is questionable with hamstring and back issues, while tackle Lane Johnson is out. That makes the running game a major question. If Barkley cannot go or cannot move freely, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert may need to carry more of the attack. Smith’s sharp routes have helped him pile up 310 receiving yards in only four games, but he is also questionable. Goedert, a strong target over the middle, could be especially important near the goal line.
New York arrives with more balance. The Giants gain 346 yards per game, about 81 more than Philadelphia, because they can attack on the ground and through the air. Malik Nabers is the big-play receiver at the center of it all. His 605 receiving yards lead this group, and his ability to climb for catches or race into open space can stretch a defense. Isaiah Likely adds another difficult target. The tight end already has five touchdown catches, showing why defenders must watch every part of the field.
Still, the Giants have their own heavy challenge. Quarterback Jaxson Dart is on injured reserve, and Skattebo is questionable with a hamstring injury after his huge Houston game. Tyrone Tracy Jr. is also out. New York may need its remaining runners and pass catchers to share the load behind an offensive line that could be without Andrew Thomas.
Philadelphia’s young defense, led by Jalen Carter and Cooper DeJean, has allowed too many long drives this season. The Eagles must stop Nabers and Likely early, then force New York into difficult third downs. The Giants, meanwhile, have lost pass-rushing star Brian Burns to injury, so slowing McKee will require a full-team effort.
The Eagles have the home crowd and a proud recent history, but the Giants have played more complete football and just showed they can finish a close game. Prediction: the Giants win.
