The first week of the 2026–27 season has turned Wednesday night in Detroit into a bright early spotlight. As of Monday, Nov. 2, the Pistons stood 6-1 and the 76ers were 7-1. Both teams have started like clubs with big dreams, but they arrive with different questions. Can Cade Cunningham guide Detroit past a star-packed Philadelphia group? And can the Sixers handle Detroit’s swarming defense without a full frontcourt?

Cunningham is the center of Detroit’s story. The 6-foot-8 guard-forward plays with the calm of a conductor, holding the ball until the right pass or opening appears. He has scored 23.7 points per game while handing out 7.1 assists, which shows how often he creates shots for the whole group. Detroit added shooters such as Duncan Robinson and Kevin Huerter to give Cunningham more room to drive. John Collins also brings springy finishes near the rim and the ability to shoot from outside.

That spacing has helped the Pistons shoot 38.1 percent from three-point range, far above Philadelphia’s 34.2 percent mark. Detroit also has won its past three games, including a 124-91 victory over Charlotte on Monday. The Pistons’ 11.6-point average victory margin tells the story of a team that has often taken control early and stayed in charge.

Yet Detroit faces a big hole inside. Center Jalen Duren is out, removing a strong rebounder, lob finisher, and rim protector. That puts extra pressure on Ausar Thompson, whose long arms and quick feet help create steals, blocks, and fast breaks. Detroit averages 9.9 steals and 6.6 blocks, making every loose pass a possible spark for the home team.

Philadelphia brings its own storm of talent. Tyrese Maxey has been blazing through the opening stretch at 29.1 points per game. His speed can turn one defensive stop into a race to the basket, and Detroit’s guards must stay in front of him without giving him clear lanes. LeBron James adds patient playmaking, with 7.3 assists per game, while Jaylen Brown gives the Sixers another powerful wing who can score and defend.

The largest question is Joel Embiid, who is listed as questionable with a foot issue. If he plays, his size and skill near the basket could challenge Detroit’s smaller frontcourt. If he cannot go, Philadelphia will need Maxey, James, Brown, and its wings to attack with pace and share the ball. The Sixers protect possessions well, giving it away only 12.9 times per game, so Detroit must earn its transition chances with active hands.

This is a clash between Cunningham’s rising young Pistons and a Philadelphia team built with championship experience. The Sixers have more star power, but Detroit is at home, has defended fiercely, and has looked especially sharp in recent games. With Duren out, it will be close, but Cunningham’s control and Detroit’s outside shooting should carry the Pistons to a win.
