The banner will rise, the crowd will roar, and the Knicks will begin a new mission Tuesday night: defend the championship. New York opens the 2026-27 regular season at home against a Philadelphia team that has rebuilt itself into a giant challenge. Both teams start 0-0, but this game already feels like the first chapter of a long Eastern Conference race.

Jalen Brunson stands at the center of New York’s story. Last season, he averaged 26 points and nearly seven assists, then led the Knicks to their first title in decades. Brunson does not need to be the tallest guard to control a game. He uses sharp footwork, sudden stops, pull-up jumpers, and clever passes to make defenders guess wrong. Philadelphia has several strong defenders, including new arrival Jaylen Brown, so Brunson’s calm choices with the ball could set the tone.

The Knicks also need Karl-Anthony Towns to own the paint. Towns averaged almost 12 rebounds last season, a huge number that shows how often he ends a defensive stop by grabbing the ball. He can also shoot from far outside, which can pull Philadelphia’s big players away from the basket. Yet New York has an important challenge: with its former shot-blocking center now in Boston, Towns and energetic guard Josh Hart must help protect the rim and battle for missed shots. Hart rebounds with the force of a much bigger player, and those extra possessions could matter.

Philadelphia arrives with a new collection of stars and plenty of ways to attack. Tyrese Maxey is the speed burst. He scored more than 28 points per game last season, using his blazing first step to race past defenders and rise for pull-up shots. The Knicks may ask OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges to take turns slowing Maxey, Brown, and LeBron James. Anunoby’s strength and quick hands helped New York sweep Philadelphia during last season’s title run, while Bridges brings steady defense against top wings.

Brown gives the Sixers a powerful scorer who can drive, hit jumpers, and guard tough opponents. James remains a brilliant passer who sees openings before most players do. Then there is Joel Embiid, the towering force near the basket. When Embiid is on the floor, he can score inside, shoot from the middle of the court, and block shots. Philadelphia led the league’s two teams here in steals last season and blocked far more shots than New York, so the Knicks must make crisp passes and avoid giving away the ball.

This is also a clash of styles. New York was the steadier team last season, winning 53 games and outscoring opponents by more than six points per night. Philadelphia scored nearly as much but finished 45-37, showing that its new group must turn talent into a complete team.

Philadelphia’s star power makes it dangerous from opening night. Still, the champions know how to share the ball, defend together, and win close moments. Prediction: the Knicks will win behind Brunson’s control and a big rebounding night from Towns and Hart.
