49ers Beat Saints 26-21
The San Francisco 49ers finished Week 2 with a close 26-21 win against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome on Sunday.
First Quarter: Defensive Battle
Both teams took their time in the first quarter, with neither team scoring. The Saints had a good chance to score early when Rattler threw a great 39-yard pass to speedy Rashid Shaheed, putting them close to the end zone. But the 49ers defense, led by All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner and defensive end Nick Bosa, stopped the Saints and forced a missed field goal.
San Francisco’s offense, with McCaffrey back on the field, moved the ball well but couldn’t score. The quarter ended with no points, building excitement for the rest of the game.
Score after Q1: Saints 0, 49ers 0
Second Quarter: Offensive Explosion
The second quarter was much more exciting. The 49ers scored first when quarterback Mac Jones threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Luke Farrell. Unfortunately, kicker Pineiro missed the extra point, so San Francisco only had six points.
The Saints replied with their best drive, as Rattler made good throws to veteran receiver Brandin Cooks and tight end Juwan Johnson. The drive ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Johnson, giving New Orleans a 7-6 lead.
But the 49ers struck back with a great two-minute drill. Jones found reliable slot receiver Jauan Jennings for a big 29-yard gain, setting up a five-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey with just 11 seconds left. This was McCaffrey's first touchdown since his return, and it thrilled the fans.
Score at Halftime: 49ers 13, Saints 7
Third Quarter: Saints Strike Back
The Saints came out strong in the third quarter. Their defense forced a crucial fumble that linebacker Demario Davis recovered at the San Francisco 47-yard line. The Saints wasted no time, as running back Alvin Kamara ran hard against the 49ers defense. Rattler then threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Shaheed.
Kamara played very well, rushing for 99 yards on 21 carries and adding 21 receiving yards on six catches. He was a big part of the Saints' offense.
San Francisco responded with a field goal, keeping their lead as they headed into the final quarter.
Score after Q3: 49ers 16, Saints 14
Fourth Quarter: Back-and-Forth Thriller
The fourth quarter was full of action. The 49ers increased their lead when Jones threw a fantastic 42-yard touchdown pass to Jennings, who made a great catch even with defenders around.
But the Saints didn’t give up. Rattler led another strong drive and found rookie receiver Devaughn Vele for a three-yard touchdown pass, bringing New Orleans within two points at 23-21.
San Francisco added one more field goal, securing the 26-21 win, with their defense stopping the Saints in the last few minutes.
Looking Ahead
This win boosts the 49ers' confidence as McCaffrey proved he is fully healthy, finishing with 55 rushing yards and 52 receiving yards along with a touchdown. The Saints showed promise, even in defeat, with Rattler making better decisions and Kamara continuing to play at a high level.
The 49ers will try to keep this momentum, while the Saints return home looking to bounce back against their next opponent. Both teams look ready to compete in 2025.
