Lions Roar Past Bears 52-21 in Ben Johnson's Emotional Return
The Detroit Lions sent a strong message to their former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Sunday. They beat his new team, the Chicago Bears, 52-21 at Ford Field. This Week 2 game showed two teams going in different directions. The Lions wanted to prove they could do well without Johnson, while the Bears hoped their new coach could quickly fix their offense.
First Quarter: Lions Strike First
Detroit got started fast, showing they were ready for this big match. Quarterback Jared Goff, who threw for 334 yards and five touchdowns, began by connecting with his favorite player, Amon-Ra St. Brown, for a 34-yard gain. The Lions moved the ball down the field, and running back Jahmyr Gibbs scored a 6-yard touchdown run to finish the first drive.
The Bears answered quickly. Quarterback Caleb Williams found rookie receiver Rome Odunze for a nice 28-yard touchdown pass. This showed Chicago that they had something to be excited about for the future. At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 7-7.
Second Quarter: Lions Pull Away
The second quarter was all about Detroit's passing game. Goff found his rhythm and connected with St. Brown for another touchdown just before halftime. The Lions showed off their balanced attack by mixing short passes with good running plays. David Montgomery, who came to Detroit after playing for Chicago, added a 1-yard touchdown run against his old team.
Chicago had a hard time keeping up with Detroit's scoring. Williams, still learning in his second season, threw an interception to a Lions safety. Even though the Bears scored a late touchdown pass to Odunze, they were down 28-14 at halftime.
Third Quarter: Lions Take Control
Detroit's offense kept going strong in the third quarter. Goff showed off his ability to throw deep, connecting with Jameson Williams for a fantastic 64-yard touchdown pass. This proved the Lions could still make big plays, even without their old coordinator. The Lions added a field goal to make the score 38-14.
The Bears struggled to score in this quarter, getting only three points. Williams faced a lot of pressure from Detroit's defense and couldn't find a good rhythm with his receivers.
Fourth Quarter: Lions Cruise to Victory
In the final quarter, Detroit's depth and skill were on display. St. Brown caught his third touchdown of the game, ending up with 115 receiving yards and three touchdowns on nine catches. The Lions added two more touchdowns to reach 52 points, while D'Andre Swift scored late for Chicago to make the final score 52-21.
Gibbs played well for Detroit, rushing for 94 yards and scoring the first touchdown. His 12 carries and three receptions showed how effectively the Lions used their talented players.
Looking Ahead
This big win shows that the Lions can still score lots of points even after losing Johnson. Goff's five-touchdown game and the team's 52 points show that Detroit's talented players can do well under new offensive coordinator John Morton.
For Chicago, this game showed that there is still a lot of work to do to change their offense. Even with Johnson's good history, it takes time to build chemistry and set up new plans. Williams showed promise with his connection to Odunze, but he needs to be more consistent.
The Lions want to keep their winning streak going when they play their next game, while the Bears need to regroup and focus on the basics as they learn Johnson’s system throughout the season.
