The Atlanta Falcons had spent two weeks trying to climb out of early holes. On Sunday, they did something even bigger: They handed the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers their first loss. Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes, and Atlanta’s defense grabbed four takeaways in a 29-20 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

San Francisco entered 6-0 with a powerful, steady offense. The 2-4 Falcons needed a complete game to prove their talented young core could finish against one of the NFC’s toughest teams. They found it by protecting the football while repeatedly taking it away from Brock Purdy and the 49ers.

Christian McCaffrey powered San Francisco down the field on the opening drive. He ran for 28 yards and caught two passes, including a 24-yard gain to the Atlanta 5. After the 49ers were stopped three times at the 1-yard line, McCaffrey finally pushed in for a 7-0 lead.

Atlanta answered with Bijan Robinson bursting for 18 yards on his first two runs. The drive stalled, but Nick Folk’s 39-yard field goal made it 7-3. The 49ers then marched again, and running back Black exploded through the middle for a 30-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. San Francisco led 14-3 and looked ready to take control.

But Penix kept Atlanta moving with quick, smart throws. Robinson caught a 15-yard pass, Khalil Herbert gained 19 more, and tight end Nick Muse caught a 1-yard touchdown. The extra point hit the upright, leaving the Falcons behind 14-9.

A huge change arrived four minutes before halftime. Safety Watts forced Black to fumble, and Atlanta recovered. Penix calmly guided a late drive into range for Folk’s 33-yard field goal, cutting San Francisco’s lead to 14-12 at halftime.

Atlanta seized the lead after the break. Penix completed passes to Kyle Pitts Sr. and Drake London as the Falcons drove 59 yards. Pitts caught a 5-yard touchdown, putting Atlanta ahead 19-14. Then, after Purdy’s pass was intercepted by safety Bates, Atlanta had the chance to stretch the game open.

Penix delivered early in the fourth quarter, hitting London deep down the left side for a 21-yard touchdown and a 26-14 lead. London finished with seven catches for 66 yards, serving as Penix’s dependable target throughout the comeback.

San Francisco fought back. Purdy threw for 288 yards, while George Kittle caught eight passes for 88 yards. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk caught a 1-yard touchdown to pull the 49ers within 26-20 with 5:05 left. Yet linebacker Daniels intercepted Purdy’s next drive, and Folk’s 31-yard field goal made it a nine-point game.

Purdy drove San Francisco to the Atlanta 19 in the final minute, but Bates forced Kittle to fumble. Linebacker Daniels recovered, and Penix knelt out the win.

The Falcons are now 3-4 and carry real momentum into their next game against Tampa Bay. The 49ers fall to 6-1 before facing the Las Vegas Raiders, reminded that even a strong offense cannot survive four lost possessions.
