Bucky Irving turned one opening into a 72-yard lightning bolt, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finally found the win they had been chasing. The Buccaneers arrived in Dallas at 0-4, needing a spark to protect their hopes in the NFC South. The Cowboys, 2-2 after missing the playoffs last season despite a powerful offense, wanted to show their rebuilt defense could help Dak Prescott’s stars win close games. Instead, Tampa Bay controlled the ground, the clock and the biggest moments in a 24-16 victory.
Dallas started like the fast-striking offense everyone expected. Javonte Williams burst through the middle for 21 yards, George Pickens made a 21-yard catch to the 8-yard line, and Williams powered in from 1 yard out. The Cowboys led 7-0, but Tampa Bay answered with a long, patient drive. Jalon Daniels kept plays alive with his feet, while Chris Godwin Jr., Cade Otton and Emeka Egbuka made key catches. Early in the second quarter, Daniels found Irving for a 5-yard touchdown to tie the game.
The Cowboys’ passing attack then stalled near midfield, but Prescott gave Dallas a late first-half lift. He hit Ryan Flournoy for 48 yards down the middle, setting up Brandon Aubrey’s 41-yard field goal. Dallas took a 10-7 lead into halftime, yet the game’s story was about to swing hard.
On Tampa Bay’s first play of the second half, Irving raced left, broke free and flew 72 yards to the Dallas 14. Two plays later, Egbuka ran around the left end for a 14-yard touchdown. Tampa Bay led 14-10, and its young playmakers had changed the game in seconds.
The Buccaneers kept coming. After a Tampa Bay linebacker intercepted Prescott’s pass, Daniels fired a 64-yard pass to Tez Johnson. Irving finished that short field with a 1-yard touchdown, then a fumble on the following Dallas kickoff gave Tampa Bay the ball right back. The Buccaneers added a 41-yard field goal for a 24-10 lead. Irving finished with 165 rushing yards on 21 carries, plus a receiving touchdown. His running helped Tampa Bay hold the ball for 39:21 and kept Prescott watching from the sideline.
Dallas did not quit. Its defense made a huge goal-line stop at the 1-yard line in the fourth quarter, and Prescott led a quick drive. Pickens capped it with an 18-yard touchdown catch to cut the score to 24-16 with 5:26 left. Pickens caught nine passes for 130 yards, showing again why he is one of Prescott’s most dangerous targets.
But Tampa Bay’s defense finished the job. Prescott moved Dallas to the Tampa Bay 24 in the final minutes, only for linebacker Alex Anzalone to intercept a pass intended for Jake Ferguson. That ended the comeback hope.
Tampa Bay is now 1-4 and carries real momentum to its next game against Pittsburgh. Dallas falls to 2-3 before facing Green Bay, with a clear lesson: big passing yards matter, but protecting the ball and stopping the run decide games like this one.
