The Top 5 Super Bowls Ever: #5 Bills vs. Giants (1991)
It was January 27, 1991, in Tampa, Florida. Super Bowl XXV (25) was about to decide the champion of the 1990 NFL season. What made this game special was that it felt bigger than football. The country was watching closely, the stadium was packed, and millions of fans were glued to their TVs.
Before the game began, singer Whitney Houston performed the national anthem. America was in the middle of the Gulf War, and her powerful performance made the moment feel serious and emotional. Then the whistle blew, and the story truly began.
Two Teams, Two Very Different Plans
The Buffalo Bills were built for speed. Their key player was quarterback Jim Kelly, who led a fast no-huddle offense. This meant the Bills didn’t stop to huddle between plays. They rushed to the line and snapped the ball quickly, hoping to catch the defense off guard.
The New York Giants had a completely different idea. Their key player was running back Ottis Anderson. The Giants wanted to slow everything down. They ran the ball, made short passes, and kept the clock moving. This is called ball control, and it keeps the other team’s offense stuck on the sideline.
Early on, Buffalo’s plan worked. The Bills jumped out to a 12–3 lead, and it looked like their speed might win the night.
One Kick That Changed Everything
But the Giants never panicked. Play by play, they wore the Bills down. Long drives ate up minutes. Anderson ran straight into defenders again and again, refusing to go down. By the second half, the Giants had taken control of the game’s pace.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Giants led 20–19. Then came Buffalo’s last chance.
With just seconds left, the Bills lined up for a long field goal. If it went in, Buffalo would win the Super Bowl. The snap was clean. The kick was high. But it went wide right and missed.
The Giants won Super Bowl XXV (25) by one point, the closest Super Bowl ever. One kick decided everything, and football history was made.
