Titans Fire Coach Brian Callahan After 1–5 Start
The Tennessee Titans made a big change this week, firing head coach Brian Callahan after a disappointing 1–5 start to the 2025 season. The move came one day after a 20–10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, another struggling team that entered the game at 1–4. Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker said the decision was about one thing: growth. “We were looking for growth in this football team, and that’s what this is about right now. We’re not seeing enough growth from this football team,” Brinker told ESPN.
A Season With Low Expectations
The Titans entered the season knowing it would be a rebuilding year. Rookie quarterback Cameron Ward, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, is learning the speed and complexity of the NFL. The offense has shown flashes of promise, especially when Ward connects with veteran receiver Calvin Ridley or tight end Chig Okonkwo, but mistakes and slow starts have hurt the team. Tennessee’s running game, led by Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears, hasn’t been consistent either. Combined with one of the league’s weakest defenses, the Titans have fallen behind early in most games and struggled to catch up.
Titans Promote Mike McCoy
Mike McCoy, the team’s quarterbacks coach, will take over as interim head coach. McCoy has been around the NFL for many years and previously served as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016. He’s known for helping quarterbacks develop and could be the right person to guide Ward through the rest of his rookie season. Players and coaches often speak highly of McCoy’s calm leadership and understanding of offensive football.
Looking Ahead
Changing head coaches in the middle of a season can be tough. Players must adjust to new routines, play calls, and leadership styles, all while trying to win games. For McCoy, it’s a chance to prove he deserves another full-time head coaching job. Many coaches who get fired eventually find success in their next opportunity, sometimes even winning championships after learning from past experiences.
The Titans’ focus now shifts to supporting their young quarterback and continuing to build for the future. While 2025 may not bring many wins, the rest of the season will give Tennessee a chance to find out who they can count on and whether Mike McCoy can help lead them in the right direction.
