Top 5 Super Bowls Ever - #2 Seahawks vs. Patriots (2015)
It was February 1, 2015, in Glendale, Arizona. Super Bowl XLIX (49) was being played under the bright lights, and it felt like a clash of giants. Two of the best teams in football had made it back to the biggest stage, and neither one blinked.
On one side were the New England Patriots, led by quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. The Patriots had not won a Super Bowl in ten years and were hungry to get back on top.
On the other side were the Seattle Seahawks, the defending champions. Their team was known for its hard-hitting defense, called the Legion of Boom, and their powerful running game lead by a big burly running back named Marshawn Lynch. Seattle was trying to become the first team in over a decade to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
A Back-and-Forth Battle
The game stayed close from the start. Both teams scored, answered back, and refused to pull away. At halftime, the Patriots led 14–10, but the Seahawks came out strong in the third quarter.
Seattle scored twice and suddenly led 24–14. It looked like the defending champs might take control. But Tom Brady had other plans.
In the fourth quarter, Brady led two long touchdown drives. Pass after pass, he marched the Patriots down the field. With just over two minutes left, New England scored again and took a 28–24 lead. The momentum had completely flipped.
One Yard From Glory
Seattle still had one last chance. The Seahawks drove all the way to the Patriots’ 1-yard line with seconds left on the clock. Everyone expected Seattle to give the ball to Marshawn Lynch, the best running back in the NFL at the time, and try to power into the end zone for the win. Instead, the Seahawks threw a pass.
Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler read the play perfectly, stepped in front of the receiver, and intercepted the ball. The stadium went silent, then exploded. The Patriots had won.
Brady was named Super Bowl MVP after setting records, but Butler’s interception, and the Seahawks' decision to throw became one of the most famous plays in NFL history.
Super Bowl XLIX (49) is remembered for its drama, its comeback, and one shocking decision at the goal line. Now, history comes full circle. The Patriots and Seahawks will meet again this Sunday, February 8th, proving that some rivalries are simply too good to end.
