Week 9 NFL Power Rankings: Contenders Rising, Pretenders Fading
As the season hits its midpoint, the top half of the league is starting to separate from the rest. The Colts continue to roll behind Jonathan Taylor, while the Packers, Buccaneers, and Eagles all look like real title threats. From surprise risers like Denver and New England to powerhouse showdowns still to come, here’s how the NFL’s best stack up heading into Week 9.
16. Chicago Bears (4–3)
The Bears fell 30–16 to the Ravens, snapping their win streak. Caleb Williams played well, throwing for nearly 300 yards, but turnovers and missed chances in the red zone hurt them. Chicago’s young core is talented, but they need more consistency to stay in the playoff race.
15. Jacksonville Jaguars (4–3)
The Jaguars keep showing flashes of greatness but can’t string wins together. Trevor Lawrence has the arm and receivers to win shootouts, yet the defense keeps giving up late drives. They’re a dangerous team when focused, but the inconsistency is holding them back.
14. Pittsburgh Steelers (4–3)
The Steelers lost 35–25 to the Packers in a high-scoring game. Aaron Rodgers and the offense did their part, but the defense couldn’t stop the big plays downfield. Pittsburgh’s veterans are keeping them competitive and they have the tools to make a playoff push.
13. Los Angeles Chargers (5–3)
The Chargers keep rolling with Justin Herbert playing smart, balanced football. Even without Najee Harris and rookie running back Omarion Hampton, Kimani Vidal has stepped up as the workhorse. If Herbert keeps spreading the ball around, Los Angeles could be a real problem in the AFC.
12. San Francisco 49ers (5–3)
Injuries are slowing down what was once a powerhouse roster. With Nick Bosa, Brock Purdy and Brandon Aiyuk sidelined, San Francisco struggled to keep up in a 26–15 loss to Houston. They’re still dangerous when healthy, but depth will decide their season.
11. Seattle Seahawks (5–2)
Seattlewas on a bye this past week. The story of this season is the emergence of star wide receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigba. The Seahawks aren’t flashy, but they’re as steady as any team in the NFC.
10. New England Patriots (6–2)
The Patriots are one of the season’s biggest surprises. Sophomore quarterback Drake Maye threw three touchdowns in a 32–13 win over Cleveland, and the defense remains sharp. Mike Vrabel’s team plays tough, smart football that travels well in November.
9. Kansas City Chiefs (5–3)
The Chiefs rolled past Washington 28–7 as Patrick Mahomes threw three touchdowns and finally looked like himself again. Travis Kelce continues to be unstoppable, and Rashee Rice is back to scoring touchdowns. Kansas City is heating up at the right time.
8. Denver Broncos (6–2)
Bo Nix is playing like a star in his second season, leading Denver to a 44–24 win over Dallas. The Broncos’ offense looks explosive with rookie RJ Harvey adding balance on the ground. After five straight wins, Denver is a legitimate AFC contender.
7. Los Angeles Rams (5–2)
The Rams continue to impress with their balance on both sides of the ball. Matthew Stafford’s connection with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams gives this offense top-tier firepower. With a solid defense and steady coaching, the Rams look ready for a deep playoff run.
6. Detroit Lions (5–2)
Detroit bounced back with a statement 24–9 win over Tampa Bay. Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs exploded for over 200 yards and two scores, showing why he was a first-round pick. The Lions are fast, physical, and clearly one of the NFC’s toughest teams.
5. Buffalo Bills (5–2)
Buffalo’s 40–9 win over Carolina showed just how dangerous they can be when everything clicks. James Cook ran wild for 216 yards, giving the Bills the balance they’ve been missing. If this run game stays hot, Buffalo will be hard to stop.
4. Philadelphia Eagles (6–2)
The Eagles rolled to a 38–20 win over the Giants behind Saquon Barkley’s revenge performance. Jalen Hurts was sharp, spreading the ball to his weapons while the defense forced turnovers. Philly looks like a complete team again and is peaking at the right time.
3. Green Bay Packers (5–1–1)
The Packers won a shootout in Pittsburgh, proving they can win in different ways. Jordan Love threw for over 350 yards, and tight end Tucker Kraft was unstoppable with two touchdowns. With balance and confidence, Green Bay looks like a real NFC title threat.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6–2)
Tampa Bay’s defense dominated the Saints 23–3 after a tough loss to Detroit. Baker Mayfield played smart, and rookie Emeka Egbukastepped up with Mike Evans still recovering. The Bucs are built to win and grind their way through the NFC.
1. Indianapolis Colts (7–1)
The Colts look like the best team in football right now. Their 38–14 win over Tennessee was another showcase of balance, Daniel Jones efficient, Jonathan Taylor explosively scored 3 touchdowns, and the defense was rock solid. At 7–1, Indianapolis is the team to beat in the AFC.
What It Means Going Into Week 9
The top half of the league looks strong and steady, but the gap between contenders and pretenders is getting smaller. Teams like the Broncos, Rams, and Lions are climbing fast, while veterans like Mahomes, Hurts, and Taylor are reminding everyone why they’re stars. As we head deeper into November, every win could mean the difference between home-field advantage and an early playoff exit.
