What Are Bones Made Of?
If you touch your arm or leg, it might feel hard and solid. That hardness comes from your bones! But bones are not just dry, lifeless sticks inside your body. They are living tissue made of several important materials that work together.
A Living Framework
Bones are made of a material called collagen and a mineral called calcium phosphate. Collagen is a soft, flexible protein. It acts like a strong rope or net. It gives bones flexibility so they don’t snap easily.
Calcium phosphate is a hard mineral. It makes bones strong and stiff. You can think of it like concrete poured over a steel frame. The collagen is the frame, and the calcium is the concrete. Together, they make bones both strong and slightly flexible.
Hard on the Outside, Spongy on the Inside
Bones have two main layers. The outer layer is called compact bone. This part is very dense and hard. It protects the inside of the bone and helps support your body weight.
Inside is spongy bone. It looks a little like a honeycomb. Even though it has tiny holes, it is still very strong. The spaces in spongy bone help make bones lighter so you can move easily.
Bone Marrow: The Hidden Helper
Inside many bones is a soft tissue called bone marrow. Bone marrow makes blood cells. These include red blood cells, which carry oxygen, and white blood cells, which help fight infection.
Always Changing
Bones are not stuck the way they are. Special cells are always breaking down old bone and building new bone. This process helps bones grow when you are a child and stay strong as you get older.
So, bones are not just hard sticks. They are living, working parts of your body made of protein, minerals, and cells that keep you moving every day
