McBride and Cardinals Turn a Blocked Punt Into a Week 1 Statement

Arizona Cardinals 26 at Los Angeles Chargers 14

How the Game Went

Arizona opened with a strong drive. Jacoby Brissett hit Trey McBride for 27 yards, and rookie Jeremiyah Love ran 5 yards for a touchdown. The Chargers tied it when Omarion Hampton scored from 8 yards out. Arizona then added two Chad Ryland field goals for a 13-7 halftime lead. After another Ryland field goal, Justin Herbert found Ladd McConkey for an 8-yard score. Fehoko blocked a punt in the fourth quarter, setting up Brissett’s 3-yard touchdown pass to McBride. Ryland’s late field goal finished the 26-14 win.

Standout Performers

McBride led Arizona’s offense with nine catches for 95 yards and the game-sealing touchdown. Brissett helped direct the steady attack, while Love gave the Cardinals an early rushing score. Ryland made three field goals, including kicks from 44 and 49 yards. On defense, safety Wingard forced and recovered Hampton’s fumble, then intercepted Herbert near Arizona’s goal line. For the Chargers, Herbert connected with McConkey three times on one drive before McConkey caught the team’s touchdown pass.

What It Means

The Cardinals are 1-0 after making a strong Week 1 statement in Los Angeles. They controlled the ball for 37 minutes and 31 seconds, which kept their defense rested and limited Chargers possessions. Arizona now heads to a game against the Seattle Seahawks with early confidence. The Chargers are 0-1 and will face the Las Vegas Raiders next. Their offense showed flashes, but turnovers and the blocked punt changed the game. Arizona’s patient teamwork showed how one big special-teams play can create momentum.
