James Cook III Carries Bills Past Raiders’ Late Rally

Buffalo Bills 33 at Las Vegas Raiders 30

A Fast Start

Tyler Bass opened the scoring at Allegiant Stadium with a 44-yard field goal, but the Raiders answered quickly. Kirk Cousins connected with Tre Tucker for 26 yards, while Ashton Jeanty gained tough yards on runs and catches. A penalty moved Las Vegas close to the goal line, and Jeanty scored on a 1-yard run for a 7-3 lead. Josh Allen then moved Buffalo down the field with a 37-yard pass to Joshua Palmer and short throws to Dalton Kincaid. Bass added another field goal, but the Bills soon found the end zone. Allen hit Keon Coleman for 21 yards, Cook caught a 23-yard pass, and Khalil Shakir scored on a 9-yard catch. The Raiders fought back before halftime as Michael Mayer made key catches and Matt Gay’s 27-yard field goal tied the game, 13-13.

The Raiders Rally

Buffalo came out strong after the break. Cook ran for 13 and 11 yards, helping Bass put the Bills ahead 16-13. Then linebacker Williams intercepted a Cousins pass at the Raiders’ 32-yard line. An interception happens when a defender catches a pass meant for the other team, and this one gave Buffalo a short path to score. Allen soon threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Coleman for a 23-13 lead. Yet Las Vegas would not fade away. Brock Bowers made a 15-yard catch that brought the Raiders to Buffalo’s 2-yard line, though Gay’s field goal was all they could get. On the next big drive, Bowers caught passes of 18 and 29 yards. Tucker then caught an 11-yard touchdown pass, tying the score 23-23 with 8:07 left.

Cook Finds the Way

The tie gave Cook his biggest chance of the day. He ran for 11 yards, then caught a 26-yard pass from Allen that carried Buffalo to the 3-yard line. On the next play, Cook powered into the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. His 95 rushing yards and 58 receiving yards gave the Bills a steady attack when they needed it most. Bass added a 38-yard field goal, but Tucker’s 44-yard touchdown catch pulled Las Vegas within three points with 1:32 remaining. Shakir secured the onside kick, a short kickoff meant to give the kicking team another chance at the ball. Allen then took three kneels to end Buffalo’s 33-30 win. The Bills moved to 5-1, while the Raiders fell to 3-3 after a hard late rally.
