Christian Watson’s Long Strikes Power Packers Past Bears
Chicago Bears 7 at Green Bay Packers 31
Waiting for a Chance
Christian Watson had one clear chance to make a big play, and he made it count. The Packers had waited since last season’s playoff loss to Chicago for another meeting with the Bears. On Sunday in Green Bay, Watson’s speed helped turn that chance into a 31-7 win. Green Bay came in at 2-2 after an uneven start. Chicago was 3-1 and held the NFC North title from last season. Early on, the Bears moved the ball with quarterback Tyson Bagent and running back D’Andre Swift. Then defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt sacked Bagent for an 11-yard loss, forcing Chicago to punt.
Watson Flashes Downfield
Jordan Love took over at his own 9-yard line and patiently moved the Packers forward. MarShawn Lloyd ran for 10 yards, while Tucker Kraft gained yards on a direct snap. Then Love saw Watson deep down the field and sent him the ball. Watson raced 42 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Soon after, safety Xavier McKinney intercepted a deep Bears pass, which means he caught a ball meant for Chicago. That gave Green Bay the ball in Bears territory. Lloyd finished the short drive with a 7-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Chicago fought back as Swift ran for 10, nine, and 12 yards on one drive. He later scored from 1 yard out, cutting the lead to 14-7. The Bears had momentum, but the Packers were ready to take it back.
The Second Lightning Bolt
After halftime, Love found Watson for 31 yards on the opening drive. Then the pair struck again. Love threw deep, Watson pulled in the pass, and the receiver ran 53 yards for another touchdown. The extra-point kick missed, but Green Bay led 20-7. Chicago missed a 43-yard field goal, and the Packers added a 35-yard kick of their own. McKinney then made his second interception, stopping another Bears drive. Love answered with a 36-yard pass to Matthew Golden, setting up Lloyd’s second rushing touchdown. A two-point pass from Love to Golden made it 31-7. The defense kept closing every door. Linebacker Ty’Ron Hopper intercepted a goal-line pass, safety Williams recovered an Odunze fumble, and Wyatt forced a fumble on a sack. Green Bay took the ball away five times without giving it away once. Watson finished with six catches for 143 yards, while Love passed for 367 yards and two touchdowns. Together, the long passes and big defensive plays gave the 3-2 Packers a powerful answer after their earlier loss to Chicago.
