Tyler Shough’s Calm Finish Sends Saints Past Giants

New Orleans Saints 34 at New York Giants 27

A Hole Becomes a Spark

The Saints came to MetLife Stadium needing a win after a 1-4 start. Yet the Giants struck first and built a 10-0 lead. Jameis Winston threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Tracy Jr., and New York later added a 34-yard field goal. New Orleans had moved the ball but missed a long field goal. Then a kickoff changed everything. A Saints linebacker knocked the ball loose from Charlie Jones, and New Orleans recovered at the Giants’ 28-yard line. Tyler Shough ran 25 yards to the 3, and with one second left before halftime, he found Bryce Lance for a 2-yard touchdown. The score was tied, and the Saints had their spark.

Shough Takes Control

That spark grew after halftime. Shough opened the third quarter with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Alvin Kamara, who found open space along the right side. Kendre Miller then pushed through tough runs to help the Saints reach the 1-yard line. A replay erased a touchdown, but Shough ran across the goal line himself for a 24-10 lead. The defense gave him more help. Martin Emerson Jr. caught two Giants passes for interceptions, meaning he took the ball away before New York could finish its plays. Chase Young and Carl Granderson also brought down Winston three times behind the line of scrimmage. A 51-yard field goal made it 27-10, and Shough soon hit Chris Olave for an 18-yard touchdown. Suddenly, the Saints led 34-10.

One Last Giants Charge

New York did not fade away. J.J. McCarthy entered at quarterback and quickly found Malik Nabers for 27 yards. Tracy then scored on a 5-yard run, and McCarthy later threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Likely. Nabers caught 12 passes for 165 yards, giving the Giants a path back into the game. A 41-yard field goal cut the lead to 34-27 with 2:04 left. But the Saints used Miller’s runs to take time off the clock, then punted the Giants deep in their own end. McCarthy reached the Saints’ 14-yard line, but his final pass fell incomplete. New Orleans improved to 2-4 because Shough and his teammates finished the key plays when the game was tight.
