Football and Thanksgiving

For many families in the United States, Thanksgiving means a big meal, time with relatives, and a football game. This pairing is not new. More than a hundred years ago, college teams were already playing football on Thanksgiving Day, and large crowds came to watch.

Over time, the tradition spread. Some high school teams play a rivalry game on Thanksgiving Day against the team from the next town, so neighbors can cheer for their school and still get home for dinner. Professional teams also play on the holiday, and fans have come to expect football on that day each year.

Why has the pairing lasted? Thanksgiving always falls on a Thursday, and many people have the day off from work and school. A game gives relatives something to share while the food is cooking. Some families toss a football in the yard before dinner. Others gather around the screen and cheer together.

Of course, football is not the reason for the holiday. Thanksgiving is a day to be thankful. Still, for many people, a game has become one of the traditions that makes the day feel special.
