Pirates Strike Early Behind O'Hearn's Two-Run Shot
The Pirates rolled into Houston ready to win after dropping an 11-9 thriller the night before. You could feel the energy shift the moment the game started. In the first inning, Brandon Lowe led off with speed and smarts, stealing a base to get into scoring position. Ryan O'Hearn stepped up and ripped a single through the middle off a 94-mph fastball from Kai-Wei Teng, and Lowe sprinted home. Pittsburgh was up 1-0 before Houston even blinked. The sixth inning brought the real fireworks. Reynolds singled to center, then O'Hearn crushed a bomb deep to right field—349 feet of pure power. The ball exploded off his bat and cleared the wall. Two runs scored and the Pirates led 4-0. Houston's pitcher Teng was getting shelled, and Pittsburgh's bats looked unstoppable.
Gonzales Scores on Error as Pirates Push Lead to 5-0
The sixth inning wasn't done yet. After O'Hearn's blast, Pittsburgh kept rolling. The ball was bouncing around the infield and Nick Gonzales found himself on base after a fielding error by Houston shortstop Jeremy Peña. Cruz rounded third and was safe there too. Then Steven Okert threw a slider that didn't have great command, and Gonzales scored on the mistake. Pittsburgh led 5-0 and the Astros looked lost. Isaac Paredes got Houston on the board with a solo homer to left field—356 feet of damage that cut into the deficit. But one run wasn't nearly enough to stop the Pirates. Jared Jones had been dominant on the mound through five innings, striking out four and allowing no runs. The Pirates' pitching was locked in and the bats were hot.
Pirates Shut Down Astros for Final Victory
Carmen Mlodzinski took over on the mound and slammed the door shut. The Pirates' relief pitcher threw four innings of fantastic baseball, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Houston never had a chance to get back in it. The Astros' bats stayed cold, and their lineup couldn't find any rhythm against Pittsburgh's pitchers. Paredes' solo shot was the only bright spot for Houston all night. When the final out was recorded, Pittsburgh had dominated from start to finish. The Pirates improved to 35-30 with this solid road victory. Houston fell to 29-37 after the loss. This win showed exactly what Pittsburgh's pitching-first identity looks like when everything clicks. Jared Jones got the win, and Mlodzinski earned the save. The Pirates proved they belonged in this series and can compete against anyone when their arms are sharp.
